Thomasville, Georgia

Thomasville is the county seat of Thomas County, Georgia. The city deems itself the City of Roses and holds an annual Rose Festival.
The City of Thomasville plants and maintains more than 7,000 roses located throughout the city, as do a number of residents who have their own rose gardens. During the last week of April, rose growers from all over the world display their prize roses for a panel of judges. Activities throughout the “City of Roses” include rose displays, parades, historical home and museum tours, street dances, arts and crafts show, nursery vendor displays, lectures, garden tours, walk/run races and food. The show is sponsored by the Thomasville Rose Society and Thomasville Garden Clubs.
The town also features plantations open to the public, a historic downtown, a large farmer's market, and a 320 year old oak tree at the corner of Monroe and Crawford streets.

Jack Montgomery Zeigler (1923-)

Born May 19, 1923, in Thomasville, GA, Jack Montgomery Zeigler was the second son and third child born to George Edward Zeigler and Christine Susan Hjort. He grew up in Thomasville and Tallahassee, FL.
Jack married Sarah Elizabeth Grier on December 4, 1954, in Johnson County, NC. They had one daughter, Susan.
Sarah lost a battle with lung cancer on May 19, 2002, and Jack has continued to live in Charlotte, NC, since her death.

George Edward Zeigler, Jr. (1918-)

Born August 2, 1918, in Thomas County, GA, George Edward Zeigler Jr. was the firstborn child of George Edward Zeigler and Christine Susan Hjort. He grew up in Thomasville, GA, and Tallahassee, FL.
He married Betty Lucile Masters on November 10, 1951, at her parent's farm in Anderson, SC, and they had two daughters, Mary Lucille (left) and Sarah Elizabeth ("Sally") (right). George and Betty made their home in Eden, NC, where George worked for Fieldcrest.
Following wife's death in November 2006, George continued to reside in Eden, NC, and now lives in Raleigh.

Sarah Martha Zeigler Edwards (1920-)

Born on September 24, 1920, in Moultrie, GA, Sarah Martha Zeigler was the second child and first daughter born to George Edward Zeigler and Christine Susan Hjort. She grew up in Thomasville, GA, and Tallahassee, FL.
Sarah married Leroy B. (Roy) Edwards and they had 3 sons; Roy Jr., George, and William (Bill).

George Edward Zeigler (1895-1967) and Christine Susan Hjort (1895-1989)


George Edward Zeigler was born on May 26, 1895, in Metcalfe, GA, to John Peter Zeigler and Mary Martha Swift.

Christine Susan Hjort was born on February 18, 1895, in Thomasville, GA, to Peter Julius Hjort and Sarah Lethird Phillips.

George and Christine married on June 2, 1917, in Metcalfe, GA. They settled in Moultrie, GA, then moved to Thomasville. George worked as an automobile insurance salesman. They had 4 children: George Edward, Jr. (1918), Sarah Martha (1920), Jack Montgomery (1923), and Christine Susan (1926). The family later moved to Tallahassee, FL.


George died on June 12, 1967, in Pensacola, FL, at the age of 72. Christine died on August 21, 1989, in Pensacola, at the age of 94.
